  • Advanced Diploma of Interior Design


Overview

Interior Designers bring aesthetic and functional qualities to the internal spaces of commercial, retail and domestic buildings with due regard to purpose, energy efficiency, safety and ergonomics.

This program will provide the skills for students to be able to solve small and large-scale design problems, gain a sound understanding of building regulations, specifications and construction techniques, and appreciate the design principles of form and space, colour and light, materials and finishes.


Job Opportunities

Graduates will be eligible for employment as interior or contract designers with architectural and interior design practices, building developers, retail planners, contract furniture designers, facilities managers and specialised architectural product designers and manufacturers.

Specialisation may lead into careers in merchandising, heritage adaptation and restoration, exhibition and set design, special event design and other specialised interior design practice.

Teaching Methods and Assessment

Teaching methods include lectures, tutorials, discussion and workshop sessions and opportunities to practice in real and/or simulated work settings.

Students will be assessed on their ability to apply their knowledge and skills to design projects that will be expected of them when they engage in professional practice in the design industry. Presentation and defence of their design solutions and decision making forms an essential part of the assessment.

Study Pathways

Credit transfers are in place with the University of Canberra for direct entry into the final year of the Bachelor of Interior Design program.

Students have the opportunity to apply for membership with the Design Institute of Australia (DIA).

There is a direct pathway from the Hong Kong Chingying Institute of Visual Arts Diploma of Interior Design into this program. Graduates of the Advanced Diploma of Interior Design will receive 2 years credit into the 3 year Bachelor of Interior Design at the University of Canberra.


Entry Requirements

  • ACT Year 12 Certificate or equivalent or Adult Entry

  • IELTS 6.0

  • A portfolio of recent work, demonstrating drawing/imaging and design skills, both conventional and electronic.

      - This could include a visual diary, sketches and drawings, images and text, design development work, photographs etc. Colour prints, CD or video presentation of your work is acceptable.

  • Interview (or other negotiated process)

Applicants who do not meet these entry requirements are able to commence studies through the Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.

Project Materials $150 (AUD) per semester
Equipment $150 (AUD) per semester
Excursions $400 (AUD) per semester


Tuition Fees

$13,000 (AUD) per year
