Building Design - Advanced Diploma


Program Summary: This program provides training in site development and building project design, documentation and management for a range of residential and commercial property development settings. Graduates will be eligible to apply for building designer positions advertised by building design, architectural and interior design practices, property developers and government department to work as part of a team or provide leadership and design project management. They will be capable of providing building design consultant services as owner/ manager of a small building design business.

Job Opportunities: Residential or commercial sector building designer/team manager, owner/manager of a small building design business

Entry Requirements: You must:
- possess an ACT Year 12 Certificate or equivalent (including any international equivalent) OR be Mature Age (turn at least 20 years in the first year of study)
AND
- present a portfolio and written statement at interview (or other negotiated process) which demonstrates your:
- drawing/imaging and design skills (conventional and/or electronic)
- creativity and conceptual skills and effective visual communication skills
- motivation and enthusiasm towards completing the program successfully (as evidenced by relevant qualifications and/or relevant experience)
- potential aptitude for design work in chosen area of study
- understanding and knowledge of the role of designer in chosen area of study
- ability to present a well-organised portfolio
- effective written and verbal communication skills.

If you are from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, using English as a second language, you will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the use of English language skills (both oral and written), equivalent to ASLPR Level 3 (or IELTS 6; or Cambridge Proficiency–level English or TOEFL equivalent).

Entry Process:
1. Submit your application.
2. Attend an interview (or other negotiated process) where you will be asked to:
- submit your academic results, résumé and references
- present a written statement, giving reasons and other supporting evidence for studying in the chosen field. This statement is to be prepared before coming to the interview where you will be able to expand on your suitability for selection into the program.
- present a portfolio of recent design work where the opportunity will be given to discuss or review the work. The portfolio should include a signed declaration that the work presented in the portfolio is your original work or from acknowledged source material.
- demonstrate your potential to complete the program successfully and achieve the standards required for employment in the design industry.

- Bachelor of Arts in Architecture
Arrangements are currently under negotiation for credit from the Advanced Diploma into:
Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology, New Zealand
- Bachelor of Architectural Studies (Architectural Technology)
- Bachelor of Architectural Studies (Interior Architecture)
