1. What is a database?
An Electronic Database is a searchable electronic collection of resources. It may contain information from a variety of sources such as journals, books or newspapers.

2. How do I access the Library’s databases?
From the Library Catalogue, click on the Databases tab.

Choose your database and click on the link. You will now need to authenticate. Type in your Library barcode number (X6......), and click Login.

You will either be taken directly to the database, or if a special username and password is required, to a list of these. Take note of the username and password for the database you have chosen, click the link, and login to the database with the username/password you have noted down. NOT your CIT number or barcode.

3. My barcode number is not recognised.
Your details may not be on the Library Management System. Take your current CITCard to your Campus Learning Centre Loans Desk to have your details entered manually. Otherwise, contact the Online Resources Coordinator

4. Why can’t I access the databases from home
Check the database list to ensure that there is no "available within CIT only" noted. Otherwise, see the answers to the following question.

5. I cannot access any databases, even though my barcode was accepted and the database list was displayed

Some databases are sensitive to cookies. You need to adjust the Privacy levels to no more than Medium High (Tools/Internet Options/Privacy).
You may need to delete cookies and/or old files. (Tools/Internet Options. Click the Delete Cookies button and the Delete Files button).
If accessing from a workplace, your organisation’s firewall may be the problem. Check with your IT staff.

If you have Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall, you may need to reconfigure the Privacy Control settings:

  1. From your Start Menu, choose Programs, then Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall.
  2. In the center section of the NIS or NPF window, you should see a list of components, each one with an icon that indicates if that feature is turned on or off. From this list, click on "Privacy Control," a little below the center of the window.
  3. A blue area should then show at the right side of the window, with two yellow buttons: "Turn Off" and "Configure".
  4. To disable Privacy Control completely, click the "Turn Off" button.
  5. Close NIS or NPF and try accessing the databases again

6. When I access the database page, I see a channel error message.
Go to Tools/Internet Options. Click the Delete Cookies button and the Delete Files button.

7. I received my CIT student card today and I am unable to access the databases with the number on the card.
The Library Management System will not be updated with your details until this evening.
Take your current CITCard to your campus Loans Desk to have your details entered manually. Otherwise, contact the Online Resources Coordinator

8. I get an "Insufficient Credentials" message.
Go to Tools/Internet Options. Click the Delete Cookies button and the Delete Files button.

9. I am trying to access the databases and I get a message telling me I cannot connect at this time or connection refused, try again later, or that there are too many concurrent users.
Too many people may be trying to access the database at once. Wait a little while then try again.

10. Who do I contact if I am having trouble accessing a database?
If you are in a CIT Learning Centre, speak to any Staff Member. Otherwise, contact the Online Resources Coordinator

11. I don’t know how to search the databases.
Each database has help features or tutorials to show you how to use each product. These online instructions should provide assistance on how to access, locate and retrieve information. Click here for a list of the databases and their tutorials or help features. Otherwise, contact the Online Resources Coordinator
