CIT Showcases Itself to College Careers Advisers

17 June 2008

The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) will open its doors to vocational training teachers, careers teachers and principals from across Canberra's public and private schools today, as part of a showcase of its training facilities and career opportunities.

The day's activities commenced with a breakfast prepared and served by CIT apprentice chefs and hospitality staff. Ian Harvey from St Edmunds College was one of the guest speakers and he gave an overview of the importance of Vocational Education and Training from a College student's perspective.

After the breakfast, almost 40 teachers and principals are being bussed around to three different CIT campuses to gain an insight on the training resources and teaching methods available at CIT.

Highlights of the day will include:

  • Guided tours of the automotive, plumbing and metal engineering workshops of the CIT Fyshwick Trade Skills Centre, some of the largest in the ACT;
  • A visit to Canberra's very own CSI training laboratory at the CIT Bruce Campus Crime Scene House;
  • The huge Building and Construction Barn and the Animal House that is home to all sorts of creatures at the CIT Bruce Campus; and
  • A behind the scenes view of the resources available at the Tourism and Hotel Management Centre, that has helped CIT win the Qantas Australian Tourism Award for the best Tourism Education and Organisation in Australia over the last 2 years. Including tours of the commercial kitchens, restaurants, butchery and hair and beauty salons.
