Home Tutor Scheme

Clients who are unable to attend classes or require extra support are offered a Home Tutor who visits them at home to help with English.

After a client has been carefully matched with a tutor, the tutor usually visits once a week for about an hour. In addition to assisting with English, tutors provide friendship, cultural information and assistance with settlement needs. They form invaluable bridges between new settlers and the Australian society.

Home Tutors are volunteers and therefore not paid, but they have special skills and are highly valued. They undertake a comprehensive training course and are provided with ongoing support and teaching resources through the Scheme.

Many tutors are involved in a variety of other activities including conversation tutorials within the AMES and throughout the community. A very popular Knit and Natter group, organised by a group of volunteer tutors, meets weekly to share craft activities and practise English conversation.
